Day trip destinations in the region – from the Ennstal to Murtal valley

Out and about around St. Nikolai im Sölktal in Styria

Culture, history and a day at the health spa: St. Nikolai and its surrounding area have a lot of inviting destinations that are really worth a visit during your holiday in Sölktal.

Castle Großsölk/Nature Park House

The historical house from the 14th century is where the Nature Park House is based today and houses the permanent “Natura Mirabilis” exhibition. You can find out how the aristocrat Johann von Hohensee lived and carried out research here 200 years ago from virtual notebooks and objects in six exhibition rooms. Explore the old trail of the mule drivers and learn about endangered species of animals, moors, mountain lakes and other natural wonders at the Castle Großsölk museum.

Sacristan House/St. Nikolai Local Museum

You can find St. Nikolai’s timbered sacristan house very close to the parish church. After the house dating back to 1639 was abandoned in ruins at the end of the 20th century, it was finally carefully restored under the authority of a preservation order. Besides information about the hiking and seminar programme in the Sölktäler Nature Park, you can find a photo exhibition and exhibition of traditional “Dirndl” dresses and crafts. Children love the large playground on the parish field.

Trautenfels Castle and Museum

Trautenfels Castle invites you to find out about the region’s culture and nature in all their multifaceted aspects in its many exhibition rooms. Anyone who climbs the viewing tower is rewarded with a unique view over the middle Ennstal valley and surrounding mountains.

Bad Aussee Salzwelten salt mines

Visitors enter a fascinating world underground in Bad Aussee. Under the motto “Mountain of Treasures”, Austria’s largest active salt mine provides amazing moments for all ages. The Chamber of Inner Light, the underground salt lake as well as the miner slides and modern sound and light presentation of the underground caves and tunnels are an adventure for the whole family.

Sölker Marmor – marble works

As a result of its superb quality, Sölker marble is valued very highly on the international natural stone market. At the local marble works in Sölk, you get a fascinating insight into the formation, processing and wide colour range of Sölk marble.

GrimmingTherme Bad Mitterndorf

GrimmingTherme, approx. 45 minutes away from St. Nikolai, is ideal for a few relaxing hours. Besides the large thermal pool and relaxation area and a separate family area, you can also relax in the sauna and with treatments.

Churches and chapels in the surrounding area
